Staff steps up for RMH overnight guests

Ruby Lansdell champions BRC’s efforts to support the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem. Each year, members of the firm order T-shirts through Ruby to show their support for families of young children in treatment at area hospitals, despite the limitations of busy season.

Proceeds from $15 T-shirt purchases go toward a night’s stay for families at the Ronald McDonald House in Winston-Salem.

“I love what they stand for,” says Ruby, a CPA in the Greensboro office who is coordinating T-shirt sales for the 6th straight year at BRC. She’s hoping to best last year’s BRC total of 61 sales, plus $150 in donations to RMH.

The 2024 T-shirt design honors the 40-year anniversary of the RMH Charities of the Piedmont Triad. A little background: In 1984, the Latham family of Winston-Salem led the charge to purchase a 10-bedroom “home away from home” where out-of-town families can stay while their children with life-threatening illnesses receive nearby medical care.

Today 36 bedrooms are available at RMH in Winston-Salem with 24-hour services. Families pay a suggested $10 donation per night. Annual T-shirt sales offset the actual cost of accommodations, which is closer to $90 a night.

In past years, BRC has supported RMH families in other ways, like shopping for popular toys at Christmas time. “We dropped them off at Santa’s workshop, a room that was completely transformed to look like the real thing,” Ruby says. Parents visit the workshop to pick out toys, and RMH staff wrap them for Christmas morning.

Another time, BRC volunteers prepared breakfast for RMH families. Ruby plans to assemble a small team from BRC to prep dinner in the communal kitchen, too.
